January 2017 - Vol. 3 - No. 1

Happy 2017 one and all!!

2017 is off to a typical start here in the Midwest. We have so far encountered extreme cold, snow, rain, and even a few days in the 50’s. Ah, St. Louis!!

I hope each of you experienced wonderful celebrations with family and friends over Christmas, and are ready to leave 2016 behind. Thus, we embrace all that is new and uncertain in 2017. One thing to help you start the new year off right is to read the latest issue of “Theodore Talks”. Enjoy!

All things music and creative!

The Greenleaf Singers (www.greenleafsingers.org) capped off our holiday performances with a great 12th Night Madrigal Evening on January 6th, 2017. My arrangement of Bring a Torch Jeannette Isabella was extremely well received, which I am humbled by and gives me pride in the group for bringing the piece together. Greenleaf will take the next few months off from major performances. We hope to pick up one or two smaller gigs in the spring. That being said, we made some fantastic music for our audiences this Christmas.

Having survived the many Christmas services and responsibilities at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, I, along with the Pastor and other staff, have already begun looking towards Lent and all that goes into enriching, enlivening, and invigorating the faith and lives of the community surrounding Good Shepherd and its members.

As mentioned in last month’s issue, keep on the lookout for something exciting to emerge within the next two months in the realm of a new compositional and creative endeavor!

Living Life to the +Plus!

Last month I hosted a new event called Coffee and Cardio. During the event, attendees enjoyed a complimentary cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate along with some helpful cardio tidbits. So, your monthly tip for taking one simple step to harmonious health is the Coffee & Cardio Card each person received:

Proactivating, NOT Complaining!
Disclaimer: I am not using this newsletter as a platform for political, social, economic, or environmental change. The following is meant to be inspirational and thought-provoking only.

The current political climate is one of anxiety, frustrations, uncertainty, and I am sure a host of other colorful adjectives. Almost every day, I cannot but be overwhelmed with all the gloom, doom, and bemoaning that comes across my newsfeed on Facebook. Pretty much every political, social, and environmental post presents current, or potential outcomes of negative, dire, harmful, (and the list goes on) events that you or I can do absolutely nothing about. For some, it may sooth their soul to enlighten others of these occurrences, which is completely their prerogative and/or option to do so. However, I ask this, “To what end, besides regurgitating someone else’s claims, whether true or not, does this achieve?”

Perhaps a more proactive approach could be of greater benefit. Instead of just simply sharing an article about the extinction of a great many animal species by the year 2050, one could provide a few (or many) ways in which we can positively impact our community’s ecosystem. Now, this is just an example. That said, the global scale of politics, social issues, etc. are beyond most of our abilities to impact. However, each of us possess the ability to proactively and positively affect our immediate situations, communities, and environments. So, I leave you with this quote from Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But, we can all do small things with great love.”
